The wonderful Oklahoma scenery and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. This section of Mountain Fork in McCurtain County is 3.2 miles long and has been rated as a class II+ section by American Whitewater. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The river winds through the Ouachita Mountains and you get great scenery. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Oklahoma tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding. There are a few other stretches in this river system that
can be paddled as well. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is a somewhat short section
so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people.
Briefly about the general area: Mountain Fork mostly gets a good deal of precipitation; most of the rain falls through May, and January is the month with the least moisture. Yep, outdoors entertaining things truly is abundant here in the Ouachita Mountains. A short trip to Presbyterian Falls is always worthwhile, and you can go for a hike on the Beaver Lodge Nature Trail.
Summer brings highs in the 90's to Mountain Fork. Throughout the moonlight hours it's commonly in the 60's. Daytime highs through the wintertime are in the 50's while Mountain Fork overnight low temperatures through the winter are in the 30's.
