If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Oklahoma you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. This is a pretty short section so no need to bring snacks. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river
system, there are a few others too. The campgrounds here at Mountain Fork are pretty good. The wonderful McCurtain County scenery and the playfulness of the water beats anything. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good spots for that around here. The
Ouachita Mountains scenery is wonderful. The Broken Bow dam to Highway 70 section of Mountain Fork in McCurtain County is 3.2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II+ section.
Briefly about the general area: During the months of summer at Mountain Fork temperatures are ordinarily in the 90's. When the night sets in temperatures descend down into the 60's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 50's with winter lows in the 30's overnight here at Mountain Fork. The beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Presbyterian
Falls, and do take a hike on the Beaver Lodge Nature Trail. All the water falling down from the sky makes Mountain Fork a wet place; May is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month of the year is January. But wait, there's more exciting stuff to do in the Ouachita Mountains.
