Oklahoma whitewater - Pennington Creek, Johnston County
Johnston
county,
Highway 7 to Tishomingo section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III(V) 9 miles
You certainly want to come when the water is up and flowing. A lot of walking and carrying your boat otherwise. The bottom is very rocky and uneven, and the creek gets wide in several spots. With the water at the current Level (06-21-2008) you will not be able to paddle through most of the creek. Devil Den, Slippery Falls, or pennington falls, all are to shallow to paddle. These are the areas that have the larger rapids when the creek is up and flowing. So they are also the places that the bottom sticks up the highest and hinders your paddle when the
water is down.A great place to put in is Camp Bond it is five miles North of Tishomingo. They do have cabins and rv hook ups there. A path right up to the creek with a zip line going across and snack shack right by the water. You can take out just above the golf course at the
low bridge, there are several houses there just north of the golf course the bridge is on the North side. Just before the damn. This run is about 4.5 miles maybe 5 on the outside. Says Ofour
Paddled this Creek 7-15-07 @ 250cfs. My paddle summary is on americanwhitewater.org From more info check out my paddle page at http://geounderground.8k.com it contains pictures of pennington creek and other streams in the area. SO CHECK IT OUT! Oh yeah, Beware of Pennington Falls, I gnared myself up on it pretty good. Says Kevin
For many miles below the
low water bridge there are no public take outs and any contact you or your watercraft make with land either on the bank or below the water represents trespassing under Oklahoma law. I know this because I was threatened with prosecution by a private property owner last time I attempted
this stretch. Not recommended! Says Roger
Instead of dropping in at highway 7 and riding down to Tish, drop in below the low water bridge between the fish hatchery and slippery falls, in high water the low water bridge can create a hydraulic that can suck you under and
possibly kill you. But the Creek Drops 100 feet from the low water bridge to below Devils Den with is like a 1.5 mile run the rest of the way to Tish isnt near as steep, watch out for fallen trees in the creek! The river is a class V when the flow gets over 200 cfs. Ive tried to
find take outs on the creek, but all the roads on my topo maps lead me to gates and dead ends. Says Kevin
The Highway 7 to Tishomingo stretch of Pennington Creek in Oklahoma is 9 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III(V) section.
The wonderful Johnston County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in is not too far from Ada, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking
in this general area you won't find many other paddling rivers. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so if you're visiting here
do keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your
car. This stretch has has enough mileage, good for a one day paddling trip. The Highway 7 to Tishomingo section is the only paddling section along Pennington Creek.
