If you're coming from Ardmore it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Oklahoma are often more forgiving than in other states, so better not forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The beautiful scenery of Oklahoma and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. This stretch of Washita River in Murray/ Carter County is 9 miles long and is rated by American
Whitewater as a class II-III section. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The wild scenery of the Arbuckle Mountains is great. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the
night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are no other sections to paddle along Washita River than the Dougherty to Gene Autry section. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The campgrounds here at Washita River are pretty good. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other places for that.
Briefly about the general area: From a rainfall point of view Washita River is a quite common place;
the wettest month of the year is usually May, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest of the months is January. Put some time aside to spend at Cedar Falls if you're here at Washita River. During the months of summer, highs generally are in the 90's at Washita River;
through summer nights temperatures are in the 70's. For the period of the wintertime the highs are commonly in the 50's, and nighttime lows at Washita River during the winter frequently descend into the 20's.
