The starting location is a reasonable drive from Bend, as you can see on the road map further down. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Crooked River Ranch to Billy Chinook Reservoir section is one of them. The Crooked River Ranch to Billy     Chinook Reservoir stretch of Crooked River in Deschutes / Jefferson County is 9 miles long and it is classified as a class III+(V) section by American Whitewater. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came. Briefly about the general area: Crooked River gets very little rain; December is the wettest month with most rain while July is regularly the driest month. During the months of summer highs here at Crooked River get into the 90's. For the duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures fall down   into the 50's. For the period of the winter highs are commonly in the 40's, and during the dark hours in the winter at Crooked River temperatures dip to the 20's.
