If you're coming from Bend it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The Lower Bridge to Billy Chinook Reservoir stretch of Deschutes River in Jefferson County is 15 miles long and is a class IV+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The wonderful Oregon scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The nearby hotels
are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camp stove. Whitewater rafting and kayaking
in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come.
Briefly about the general area: At Deschutes River during the long summer days highs are in the 90's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's usually in the 50's. All through the wintertime this place gets highs in
the 40's, and throughout the dark hours in the winter at Deschutes River temperatures dip to the 20's. A trip to Deschutes River wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Steelhead Falls. Deschutes River is a location that is rather waterless usually; December is the wettest month with most rain; the driest month of the year is July.
