The US 26 to Sherars Falls stretch of Deschutes River is 53 miles long and has been rated as a class III section by American Whitewater. The average Oregon whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. If you're coming from City of The Dalles it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can
see on the road map further down. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. You might be into
whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you won't find a large number of other rivers. The campgrounds here at Deschutes River are pretty good. The natural beauty of Jefferson/ Wasco/ Sherman County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: Deschutes River is pretty dehydrated mostly; December is the month that gets the most rain, and July is the month
with the least moisture. Mutton Mountain Spring is a tremendous local attraction, and while you're here why not visit Lousey Hollow. At Deschutes River through the days of summer highs are in the 80's, and during the night it cools down to the 40's. For the period of the winter highs are typically in the 40's while Deschutes River nighttime low temperatures through the winter are in the 20's.
