The put-in is not too far from Brookings, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of Oregon and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The Slate Creek to Elk River Hatchery section of Elk River in Oregon is 6.5 miles long and is rated
by American Whitewater as a class III-IV section. There are no other sections to paddle along Elk River than the Slate Creek to Elk River Hatchery section. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. This
section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are not so many other good rivers for that around here. The Coast Ranges scenery is wonderful.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the warm months at Elk River highs are commonly in the 60's. Once the sun is down it descends down to the 50's. The winter brings highs
down to the 50's, and during the dark hours in the winter at Elk River temperatures fall to the 30's. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Grassy Knob Trail. All the water falling down from the sky makes Elk River a wet location; of all the months in a year December is the one with the most rain, and July on the other hand is the driest.
