The Slate Creek to Elk River Hatchery section of Elk River in Curry County is 6.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV section. The put-in is not too far from Brookings, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river
if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an
afternoon trip. The river winds through the Coast Ranges and you get great scenery. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you won't find a large number of other spots. This is the only paddling stretch along Elk River. The scenic beauty of Curry County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. The campgrounds here at Elk River are pretty good.

region. Summertime at Elk River comes with high temperatures in the 60's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 50's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 50's, and nighttime lows during the wintertime for Elk River tend to be in the 30's. Elk River is a quite wet place regularly with a lot of precipitation; December is the month that gets the most rain; July is when it's the driest.
