Oregon whitewater - Grande Ronde River, Blue Mountains, Union County

Union county, Tony Vey Meadow to Red Bridge State Park section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-IV     17 miles
If you're coming from La Grande it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The natural beauty of Union County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you won't find a large number of other rivers. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your sleeping bag. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This section
of Grande Ronde River is 17 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-IV section. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking
river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The wild scenery of the Blue Mountains is great. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well.

Briefly about the general area:
Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Blue Mountains. Penny Spring

is a great local attraction. All through the months of summer at Grande Ronde River temperatures are typically in the 80's. During the moonlight hours it's frequently in the 50's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's while Grande Ronde River nighttime low temperatures throughout the wintertime are in the 20's.
Sheep Camp Spring is always fun to check out, and there's nice hiking along the Hoodoo Trail. Grande Ronde River is a location that is relatively waterless generally; the wettest month of the year is mostly November, that's the one that rains the most, and July is when it's the driest.
