The average Oregon whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so better not forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. If you're coming from La Grande it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The wonderful     Oregon scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. This stretch is mid length, it's good length for a morning trip. When you're paddling down a Blue Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. The Red Bridge State Park to Hilgard Junction State Park stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are not so many other good spots for that around here. Briefly   about the general area: Near Grande Ronde River you stumble on the Hoodoo Trail which is a tremendous hiking trail. Not much precipitation falls here at Grande Ronde River; most of the rain falls during November, and the driest month is July. For the duration of the warmest time of the year at Grande Ronde River highs are commonly in the 80's. For the duration of the moonlight hours it's frequently in the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 30's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Grande Ronde River.
