The starting location is a reasonable drive from La Grande, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This section of Grande Ronde River is 8 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II section of whitewater. The scenic beauty of Union County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. There's camping available near Grande Ronde River. This stretch is mid length, it's good length for a morning trip. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in
nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. You might be into whitewater rafting
or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a pretty small number of paddling places. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The Red Bridge State Park to Hilgard Junction State Park stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. The river winds through the Blue Mountains and you get great scenery.
