The Hilgard Junction State Park to Riverside City Park stretch of Grande Ronde River is 9 miles long and is a class II-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The put-in location is a short drive from La Grande, as you can see on the road map further down. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon. Lodging is available near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The beautiful Blue Mountains scenery is an added bonus. There's camping available near Grande Ronde
River. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Oregon you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The natural beauty of Oregon and the playfulness of the water are
in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other rivers for that. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: If you're addicted to cool geologic characteristics, try Devils Slide; you can go for a hike on the Summit Mount Emily Trail. Whohoo, so many fun things in one
place! The Blue Mountains rules! If you want a little side spree, try Bear Canyon, and going for a hike on the Evans Trail is always a wonderful adventure. Throughout the months of summer at Grande Ronde River temperatures are regularly in the 80's while night lows are usually
in the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 30's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Grande Ronde River plunge into the 20's. Around Grande Ronde River you don’t get a lot of precipitation; of all the months in a year January is the one with the most snow; July is when it's the driest. Lots of fun awaits you along this river.
