The put-in location is a reasonable drive from La Grande, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The scenic beauty of Union County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Oregon are harder than the national norm, so better not forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. Hilgard Junction State Park to Riverside City Park stretch of Grande Ronde River is 9 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-IV section. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. There are
plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. The Blue Mountains scenery is wonderful. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with not too many other places for that. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Grande Ronde River regularly tend to be in the 80's with nighttime lows in the
50's. For the duration of the winter highs are in the 30's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Grande Ronde River. This river is a great place to visit. All the outdoors cool things in the Blue Mountains will keep you coming back time and again. Why not take a refreshing
hike along the Evans Trail; Bear Canyon is also a brilliant site to explore. Grande Ronde River gets very little rainfall; most of the snow falls through January, and July is the month with the least moisture. Take a hike on the Summit Mount Emily Trail, and you ought to beyond doubt check out Devils Slide during your stay.
