The nature scenery of Union County and the playfulness of the water beats anything. If you're coming from La Grande it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. Lodging is available near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. The Blue Mountains scenery is wonderful. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon. This is not the only paddling stretch
in this river system, there are others too. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Oregon tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this
state are less manageable. The Hilgard Junction State Park to Riverside City Park stretch of Grande Ronde River in Union County is 9 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-IV section. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you won't find a large number of other places.
Briefly about the general area: This site, the Blue Mountains, has so much outdoors fun things. The Summit Mount Emily Trail is a nice hiking trail in close proximity to Grande Ronde River; no need
to travel far to pop by out of the ordinary stuff like Devils Slide. At Grande Ronde River all through the summer months highs are in the 80's, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 30's with winter lows
in the 20's overnight here at Grande Ronde River. At Grande Ronde River you don’t see much rainfall; January is the month that gets the most snow while July is mostly the driest month. If the weather is great here at Grande Ronde River, you can go for a hike along the Evans Trail; Bear Canyon is a brilliant site to have a look at. At this river you will always have a good time.
