The natural beauty of Oregon and the water flowing gracefully down John Day River beats anything. A stretch of this length does require some preparations, so better bring your camping gear along. This section of John Day River is 47 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling places. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging,
so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Service Creek to Clarno section is one of them. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. A good workout and a chance to spend some
time outdoors are great reasons to come. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
Briefly about the general area: At John Day River you don’t see much precipitation; November is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month is July. For the duration of the months of summer at John Day River highs are mostly in the 80's. During the dark hours of summer temperatures plunge down into the 40's.
