The Service Creek to Clarno stretch of John Day River in Oregon is 47 miles long and has been rated as a class II section by American Whitewater. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Oregon are harder than the national norm, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of
the sections here are not easy. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a pretty small number
of paddling spots. The scenic beauty of Oregon and the water flowing gracefully down John Day River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at John Day River mostly tend to be in the 80's while nighttime lows are ordinarily in the 40's. Throughout the wintertime highs are frequently in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at John Day River. Around John Day River you don’t get a lot of rainfall; all through the month of November you get the most rain around here
while July is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Mathieson Spring is a perfect local attraction, and a great site to visit is Old Mill Canyon.
