A stretch of this length does require some preparations, so better bring your camping gear along. This section of John Day River is 47 miles long and is a class II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling places. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging,     so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Service Creek to Clarno section is one of them. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
