You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Briefly about the general area: John Day River is frequently a rather dehydrated spot; of all the months in a year November is the one with the most rain while July is the month with the least amount of precipitation. A trip to Mathieson Spring will fill your spirit with great feelings, and a pleasant place to explore is Old Mill Canyon. Throughout the summertime months highs here at John Day River get into the 80's, and through the night it cools down to the 40's.
The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 40's, and during the dark hours in the wintertime at John Day River temperatures fall to the 20's.
