Nehalem is great for tubing, summer. Dont keep valuables in cars while on the river Kkayaked last two years in mid june and itwas fun, nice camping. The road becomes gravel part way. Watch for log trucks! Wear a helmet. Lots of flooding this winter with new washouts and logs. Says Frank Peper...Astoria
The river gets very low in the late summer months (July August and September), and is wild and high in the winter. The difficulty of this river is very much dependant on the time of year. My fav river. :) sorry, no pic to add. Says Molly
The
beautiful scenery of Oregon and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. The starting point is not too far from Astoria, as you can see on the road map further down. The Spruce Run Park to Nehalem Falls section of Nehalem River is 14.2 miles long and is rated
by American Whitewater as a class III section. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Oregon are often more challenging than in other states, so keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. Since you're
on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. The Spruce Run Park to Nehalem Falls stretch is the only paddling stretch along Nehalem River. Whitewater paddling here in the Coast Ranges is a great
experience. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby.
