The beautiful scenery of Oregon and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Upper Nehalem to Vernonia section of Nehalem River in Columbia County is 10 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are not easy. You might
have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. You can enjoy this stretch
more if you take your time, so why not pack your camp stove too. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The river winds through the Coast Ranges and you get great scenery.
Briefly about the general area: Throughout the warm days of summer at Nehalem River temperatures are usually in the 70's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 50's. The wintertime
brings highs down to the 40's with temperatures at Nehalem River dipping down into the 30's during winter nights. All the water falling down from the sky makes Nehalem River a wet site; of all the months in a year December is the one with the most rain, and July is the month with the least moisture.
