Columbia
county,
Vernonia to Birkenfeld section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I(II) 25.9 miles
Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Oregon are harder than the national norm, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The Vernonia to Birkenfeld section of Nehalem River is 25.9 miles long and is a class I(II) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. If you're a camper you can camp at
one of the great campgrounds nearby. The Coast Ranges scenery is wonderful. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are
lots of good rivers for that around here. The scenic beauty of Oregon and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camping stuff.
