The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Hood River, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The wonderful Oregon scenery and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. This is a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip. When you're paddling down a Central Cascade
Range river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. The McNeil Campground to Lolo Pass Road stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places
for that. The campgrounds here at Sandy River are pretty good. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The McNeil Campground to Lolo Pass Road section of Sandy River in Clackamas County is 4.5 miles long and has been rated as a class IV section by American Whitewater. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come.
Briefly about the general area: Have a nice
hiking adventure along the West Zigzag Mountain Trail, and going for a hike along the Flag Mountain Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this area. Sandy River gets lots of water; the month of December is the wettest with most of the rain, and July meanwhile is the driest
month. Just can't get enough of the Central Cascade Range. Throughout the warm days of summer highs here at Sandy River get into the 70's. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures drop down into the 50's. Throughout the winter this place gets highs in the 40's, and after the sun is down during the winter temperatures at Sandy River descend into the 30's.
