McNeil Campground to Lolo Pass Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV 4.5 miles
Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Oregon is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Hood River, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The McNeil Campground to Lolo Pass Road section of Sandy River in Oregon is 4.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV section. The scenic beauty of Clackamas County and the playfulness of the water beats anything. This section
is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. This
river system is full of great paddling stretches, the McNeil Campground to Lolo Pass Road stretch is just one of them. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. When you're paddling down a Central Cascade Range river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the days of summer highs here at Sandy River reach the 70's while night
lows are ordinarily in the 50's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 40's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Sandy River dip into the 30's. That right there is a heap of exciting things already but it goes on, the Central Cascade
Range has it all. Going for a hike on the West Zigzag Mountain Trail is always a pleasant adventure, and there are great locations to look at along the Flag Mountain Trail. Sandy River sees pretty high levels of rainfall; December is when you get the most rain here, and the driest of the months is July.
