If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. This stretch of Squaw Creek in Deschutes County is 6.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV+ section. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. This stretch is mid length, it's good length for a morning trip. There are no other sections to paddle
along Squaw Creek than the FS 1514 Bridge to Gaging Station section. The Central Cascade Range scenery is wonderful. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Whether you're whitewater rafting or
kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. The natural beauty of Oregon and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. If you're coming from Bend it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page.
Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Squaw Creek a wet spot; throughout December this area sees the most snow, and July is the month with the least moisture. You just can't imagine the amount of
outdoors exciting stuff the Central Cascade Range has to offer. Melvin Spring is a splendid local attraction. High temperatures at Squaw Creek during the summer months are in the 70's while night lows are regularly in the 40's. Highs through the winter are regularly in the
30's, and overnight lows at Squaw Creek throughout the winter ordinarily plunge into the 10's. Put some time aside to spend at Black Pine Spring since you're here at Squaw Creek, and don't leave Squaw Creek without first going for a hike along the Three Creek Lake Trail.
