The scenic beauty of Douglas County and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The starting location is a short drive from Roseburg, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Oregon are often tougher than in other states, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill
up quick. Whitewater paddling here in the Coast Ranges is a great experience. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a pretty small number of paddling spots. This section of Umpqua River in Douglas County is 84 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II
section by American Whitewater. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Now this is a pretty long section, perfect for a real wilderness adventure.
Briefly about the general area: Umpqua River is a wet place that gets a good deal of rainfall; the wettest month of the year is commonly December, that's the one that rains the most,
and the driest of the months is July. Summertime at Umpqua River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's. For the period of the dark hours of summer temperatures plunge down into the 50's. Through the wintertime the highs are usually in the 40's, and through the dark hours in the wintertime at Umpqua River temperatures plunge to the 30's.
