The Tollgate to Sandy River section of Zigzag River is 3.2 miles long and has been rated as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Hood River, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The nature scenery of Clackamas County and the cool fresh water have people coming here. This is a pretty short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. There are some good hotels near the river, but if you don’t have reservations
you might end up sleeping in your car. The river winds through the Central Cascade Range and you get great scenery. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average,
so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. This is the only paddling section along Zigzag River.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the days of summer at Zigzag River temperatures are mostly in the 70's. For the duration of the
moonlight hours it's ordinarily in the 50's. High temperatures all through the wintertime are normally in the 40's, and after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Zigzag River plunge into the 30's. The high level of rainfall makes Zigzag River a pretty wet place;
the month of December is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest month of the year is July. These mountains rock, just look at all the enjoyable things to do in the Central Cascade Range. On a perfect day at Zigzag River you can take a hike along the Flag Mountain
Trail. While you're here at Zigzag River you can take a hike along the West Zigzag Mountain Trail, and a cool spot to stop by is Crutcher Bench.
