Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. This stretch of Chest Creek is 34 miles long and is a class I-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of Cambria/Clearfield County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before
you come because it is a very popular destination. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. The starting point is not too far from Johnstown, as you can see on the road map further down. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
This is the only paddling stretch along Chest Creek. A stretch of this length does require some preparations, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places.
Briefly about the general area: Driscoll Hollow is in the vicinity of Chest Creek and is a glorious site. During the summertime months highs here at Chest Creek get into the 70's. For the duration of the moonlight hours it's frequently in the 50's. Daytime highs through the winter
are in the 20's while the cold winter nights at Chest Creek are in the 10's. Chest Creek gets a common amount of precipitation; the month with most of the rain is June, and January is when it's the driest.
