The nature scenery of Jefferson County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. If you're coming from St. Marys it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have     reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other good rivers for that around here. The Portland Mills to Cooksburg stretch of Clarion River in Jefferson County is 28 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. Briefly about the general area: At Clarion River all through the days of summer highs are in the 80's, and the night is a bit chillier of course, mostly in the 50's. Highs during the wintertime are   generally in the 30's; nighttime lows in the 10's for Clarion River. There's great hiking along the Pine Run Trail, and the Callen Run Trail offers hiking at its best.
