  The nature scenery of Jefferson County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so better not forget that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The Portland Mills to Cooksburg section of Clarion River in Pennsylvania is 28 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other spots
    for that. Clarion River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Portland Mills to Cooksburg stretch is the only one. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. If you're coming from St. Marys it's not a long drive
at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your camp stove too. The campgrounds here at Clarion River are pretty good. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.

Hiking along the Pine Run Trail is great fun; you can have a nice hiking adventure along the Callen Run Trail. High temperatures at Clarion River through the months of summer are in the 80's while overnight lows are typically in the 50's. Throughout the winter highs are in the 30's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Clarion River.
