If you're coming from Somerset it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This section of Dark Shade Creek in Pennsylvania is 1.1 miles long and is a class IV-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The average Pennsylvania whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a
bit easier to master than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The nature scenery of Somerset County and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. There are no other stretches
to paddle along Dark Shade Creek than the Rockingham to Clear Shade stretch. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. This is an extremely short section so better bring some good walking shoes. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby.
