The Rockingham to Clear Shade section of Dark Shade Creek in Somerset County is 1.1 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Pennsylvania you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so better not forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This is the only paddling section along Dark Shade Creek. Getting some good exercise and a     chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good rivers for that around here. This is an extremely short section so no need to bring snacks. The scenic beauty of Pennsylvania and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Briefly about the general area: A common amount of precipitation falls here at Dark Shade Creek; most of the rain falls during July while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Near Dark Shade Creek you find the Old '56'   Trail which is a splendid hiking trail.
