Pennsylvania whitewater - Drake Run, Somerset County
Somerset
county,
Draketown to Youghiogheny River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV-V+ 2 miles
The Draketown to Youghiogheny River stretch of Drake Run in Pennsylvania is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V+ section. The beautiful scenery of Pennsylvania and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. This is a somewhat short section so you'll
have to walk back to the start over and over. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The starting point is not too far from Somerset, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. There are no other sections to paddle along Drake Run than
the Draketown to Youghiogheny River section. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Drake Run a wet place; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain, and February is when it's the driest. Ohiopyle Gorge is close to Drake Run and is a wonderful site. High temperatures
at Drake Run through the days of summer are in the 80's, and the night is a tad chillier of course, ordinarily in the 50's. For the duration of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 30's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Drake Run.
