Pennsylvania whitewater - Elk Creek, Centre County Centre county, Smulton to Penns Creek section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-III     7.8 miles   The wonderful Centre County scenery and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Lock Haven, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon trip. Elk Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling     stretches, the Smulton to Penns Creek stretch is the only one. This stretch of Elk Creek in Pennsylvania is 7.8 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling spots. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Briefly about the general area: Summertime at Elk Creek comes with high temperatures in the 80's. Through the dark hours of summer temperatures dip down into the 50's. For the period of the winter the highs are generally in the 30's, and night lows all through the winter for Elk Creek   tend to be in the 10's. Going for a hike along the Kerstetter Path will let you absorb the natural beauty of this area. A common amount of rain falls here at Elk Creek; the month with most of the rain is June while January is generally the driest month. While you're here at Elk Creek you can take a hike along the Dry Hollow Trail; Waterhouse Gap is positively a fine place to take a look at.
