The wonderful Pennsylvania scenery and the cool fresh water beats anything. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Pennsylvania are often more forgiving than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip. There are no other stretches to paddle along Elk Creek than the Smulton to Penns Creek stretch. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came.
You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Since you're on this site you are probably into
whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you won't find a large number of other places. The starting point is not too far from Lock Haven, as you can see on the road map further down. This section of Elk Creek is 7.8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section.
Briefly about the general area: All through the warmest time of the year, highs generally are in the 80's at Elk Creek, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. Highs during the wintertime are usually in the 30's; after the sun is down
all through the wintertime temperatures at Elk Creek descend into the 10's. Don't leave Elk Creek without first going for a hike along the Dry Hollow Trail, and Waterhouse Gap is a tremendous location to spend some time. Elk Creek gets a common amount of annual rain; June is the month that gets the most rain while January is usually the driest month. Go for a hike on the Kerstetter Path.
