CLASS II-IV 10 miles
This section of Fourmile Run in Westmoreland County is 10 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-IV section. The starting point is not too far from Somerset, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The wonderful Westmoreland County scenery and the cool fresh water have people coming here. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Pennsylvania are often easier than in other states, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. Since you're on
this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great
campgrounds nearby. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camp stove. This is the only paddling stretch along Fourmile Run. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: Possum Hollow is a delightful spot to explore. For the duration of the warm months at Fourmile Run highs are typically in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures plunge
down into the 50's. Highs through the wintertime are mostly in the 30's, and night lows all through the winter for Fourmile Run tend to be in the 10's.
