Pennsylvania whitewater - Lackawanna River, Susquehanna / Wayne / Lackawanna County
Susquehanna / Wayne / Lackawanna
county,
Stillwater Lake to Carbondale section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-III 9.8 miles
Nice section of the river. Scenerey is very good at the beginning but sort of degrades as you approach Carbondale. Rapids are mostly cobbles with a few rock gardens and several ledges. One that can surprise you is the ledge just before Simpson. Kind of sneaks up on you. Depending upon water level, can be a 2 - 3 foot drop. This drop should be scouted to check for strainers. Go straight through gap at center with boof or make a left at the crag in river center for a blind twisting chute. The river gradient is pretty steep so there is just about constant
white water class I and II. Says Dan
The scenic beauty of Susquehanna / Wayne / Lackawanna County and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. The average Pennsylvania whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other
states, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are campgrounds quite near the river
where you can camp. The starting point is not too far from Scranton—Wilkes-Barre, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This section of Lackawanna River in Susquehanna / Wayne / Lackawanna County is 9.8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as
a class I-III section.
