Nice section of the river. Scenerey is very good at the beginning but sort of degrades as you approach Carbondale. Rapids are mostly cobbles with a few rock gardens and several ledges. One that can surprise you is the ledge just before Simpson. Kind of sneaks up on you. Depending upon water level, can be a 2 - 3 foot drop. This drop should be scouted to check for strainers. Go straight through gap at center with boof or make a left at the crag in river center for a blind twisting chute. The river gradient is pretty steep so there is just about constant

This stretch of Lackawanna River is 9.8 miles long and has been rated as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. If you're coming from Scranton—Wilkes-Barre it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map
further down the page with more info on that. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon trip. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are not so many other good spots for that around here. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here
in Pennsylvania are often easier than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Stillwater Lake to Carbondale section is one of them. The nature
scenery of Susquehanna / Wayne / Lackawanna County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle.

the 70's, and throughout the night it cools down to the 50's. All through the winter highs are regularly in the 20's, and overnight lows in the 10's for Lackawanna River. Lackawanna River is a wet place that gets a lot of rain; June is the month that gets the most rain, and February is the month with the least moisture.
