The Rector to Latrobe stretch of Loyalhanna Creek is 16.4 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The starting point is not too far from Somerset, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these
hotels fill up quick. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. The Rector to Latrobe stretch is the only paddling stretch along Loyalhanna Creek. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The nature
scenery of Westmoreland County and the water flowing gracefully down Loyalhanna Creek are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your camp stove too.
Briefly about the general area: Through the long summer days at Loyalhanna Creek highs are regularly in the 80's; throughout summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. During the winter highs are commonly in the 30's; night lows at
Loyalhanna Creek all through the winter mostly drop into the 10's. Saint Clair Hollow is a nice spot to go to nearby. Loyalhanna Creek gets a normal amount of rainfall; July is the wettest month with most rain while February is regularly the driest month.
