Pennsylvania whitewater - Shohola Creek, Pike County
Pike
county,
Shohola Falls Park to Mouth section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-IV 9.5 miles
Raft??? First off, I cant see raft going through box canyon. It might be possible, but I wouldn't want to see someone I care about be the first. After the box, downstream of the route 6 bridge, you would need a lot of rain, I mean an awful lot of rain to get through the flat water section. Personally, I do some tough runs (CL4+) and I'm not sure I'd wanna be there with that much water. With plenty of water, medium level, we were scraping a lot in the flat water section. Also, in the canyon, if someone gets hurt, they are in for a bad day. This is evident
by looking at a typo map or looking down from route three bridge. ''outside the state you might find the rivers here are more forgiving''. My travel for White Water is limited: NY, NJ, MA, CT, WV, MD, VT, NC. Never been out west. With my limited experience the above states and
PA and 5 years kayaking including winter, I have no clue what the above quote means. Ratings CL1-5 (6 being a rating meaning it might not be runable), while far from perfect is a pretty good indication of water difficulty. Don't paddle here unless you know what you or doing. Says J.D.
The nature scenery of Pennsylvania and the water flowing gracefully down Shohola Creek will make you feel great. The put-in is not too far from East Stroudsburg, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This section of Shohola
Creek is 9.5 miles long and has been rated as a class I-IV section by American Whitewater. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. There are no other sections to paddle along Shohola Creek than the Shohola Falls
Park to Mouth section. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Pennsylvania you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so better not forget that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing
to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. This
is a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip.
