Pennsylvania whitewater - South Sandy Creek, Vernango County Vernango county, State Game Lands # 39 to Pecan section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     6.5 miles   If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Pennsylvania you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The put-in is not too far from Oil City, as you can see on the road map further down. This section of South Sandy Creek in Pennsylvania is 6.5 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because     these hotels fill up quick. The natural beauty of Vernango County and the water flowing gracefully down South Sandy Creek are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This stretch has has enough mileage, good for a one day paddling trip. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. The State Game Lands # 39 to Pecan section is the only paddling section along South Sandy Creek. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Briefly about the general area: South Sandy Creek sees pretty high levels of precipitation; during the month of August you get the most rain around here, and February is the month with the least moisture. Summer brings highs in the 80's to South Sandy Creek while nighttime lows are usually in the 50's. The cold   days of the wintertime come with highs in the 30's with temperatures at South Sandy Creek dipping down into the 10's during winter nights.
