The nature scenery of Bedford County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Pennsylvania tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The Chaneysville to I-68 section of Town Creek in Bedford County is 15 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Chaneysville to I-68 section is one of them.
Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Cumberland, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t
get lost. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camp stove.
Briefly about the general area: Good hiking is available along the Carnes Trail, and a perfect place close by is Black Valley. High temperatures
at Town Creek during the summertime are in the 80's with overnight lows in the 50's. All through the winter the highs are ordinarily in the 30's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Town Creek dip into the 10's. Town Creek is a good site of normal
rainfall; July is when you get the most rain here, and January is when it's the driest. Hiking is a popular thing to do around Town Creek; Sawmill Trail is a splendid local trail.
