South Carolina whitewater - Broad River, Richland County Richland county, I-20 to Congaree River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     4 miles   If you're coming from Columbia it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The wonderful Richland County scenery and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. This section of Broad River in Richland County is 4 miles long and has been rated as a class     II-III section by American Whitewater. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with not too many other rivers for that. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Broad River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the I-20 to Congaree River stretch is the only one. Lodging is available near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. Briefly about the general area: Throughout the warm months at Broad River highs are usually in the 90's. During the moonlight hours it's regularly in the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 50's, and   overnight lows at Broad River through the winter frequently dip into the 20's. During your journey to Broad River you'll meet some people from Columbia for sure. Broad River is a wet location that gets a lot of precipitation; through the month of March you get the most rain around here, and the driest month is November.
