South Carolina whitewater - Broad River, Richland County Richland county, I-20 to Congaree River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     4 miles   The wonderful South Carolina scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The I-20 to Congaree River stretch of Broad River in Richland County is 4 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. The campgrounds here at Broad River are pretty good. Great exercise and     a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Columbia, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with not too many other spots for that. There are no other sections to paddle along Broad River than the I-20 to Congaree River section. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip. Briefly about the general area: The high level of rainfall makes Broad River a relatively wet place; most of the rain falls through March while November is the month with the   least amount of precipitation. During your journey to Broad River you'll meet some folks from Columbia for sure. During the days of summer highs here at Broad River reach the 90's. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 60's. All through the winter highs are in the 50's while the cold winter nights at Broad River are in the 20's.
