South Carolina whitewater - Chattooga River, Blue Ridge Mountains, Rabun GA / Oconee SC County

Rabun GA / Oconee SC county, Highway 28 Putin to Earl's Ford section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II     7 miles

We run it in 17 ft canoes and Big Shoals is the only class 3 rapid. You will have to portage your boat 1/2 mile uphill at Earls ford take out on the SC side of the river. On Low Water Bridge Rd of Hwy 28 there are about 10 primative campsites beside the river, excellant camping and trout fishing but sometimes rowdy(more than likely they are related to me) lol. Says Donald Morton

The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in South Carolina are often more forgiving than in other states, so don't forget that rivers here are not as hard
as elsewhere. The Highway 28 Putin to Earl's Ford section of Chattooga River is 7 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II section of whitewater. The starting location is a short drive from Seneca, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page
so you won’t get lost. The campgrounds here at Chattooga River are pretty good. The natural beauty of South Carolina and the water flowing gracefully down Chattooga River have people coming here. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Highway 28 Putin to Earl's Ford stretch is just one of them. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling
places. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day paddling trip. The wild scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is great. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.

Briefly about the general area:
Big Shoals is a delightful spot to spend some time at, and going for a hike on the Three Forks Trail is always a nice adventure. At Chattooga River all through the months of summer highs are in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures plunge down into the 50's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 40's, and overnight lows at Chattooga River through the wintertime frequently sink into the 20's. This river has it all.
You just can't imagine the amount of outdoors fun stuff the Blue Ridge Mountains has to offer. Big Shoals is an inspiring location to stop at during your stay, and there is a delightful hiking trail nearby called the Burrells Ford Trail. A good deal of rain falls at Chattooga River; most of the rain falls during March, and July meanwhile is the driest month.
