The scenic beauty of Lexington/ Richland County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you're coming from Columbia it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in South Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead
and pack your sleeping bag. This stretch of Saluda River in South Carolina is 11 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-IV section. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, and if you make reservations in advance
you're all set. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you won't find many other paddling spots. Saluda River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Lake Murray Dam to Broad/Congaree confluence section is the only one.
Briefly about the general area: Saluda River sees pretty high levels of rain; through March this area
sees the most rain, and November is the month with the least moisture. Summertime highs at Saluda River commonly tend to be in the 90's. Summer overnight lows sink down to the 60's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 50's while the cold winter nights at Saluda River are in the 20's. Here at Saluda River there are plenty of folks from Columbia.
