The starting location is a reasonable drive from Newberry, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The nature scenery of South Carolina and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside South Carolina you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting
or kayaking, either way around here you won't find a large number of other spots. This is the only paddling stretch along Tyger River. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. This stretch of Tyger River in Spartanburg/ Union
County is 11.6 miles long and has been rated as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. There's camping available near Tyger River. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Briefly about the general area: Summer at Tyger River comes with high temperatures in the 90's, and all through the night it cools
down to the 60's. Highs through the winter are generally in the 50's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Tyger River. Tyger River is a wet place that gets a good deal of rain; the month of March is the wettest with most of the rain, and April is the month with the least moisture.
