Whitewater rafting and kayaking in South Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. The starting point is not too far from Newberry, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camp stove. Tyger River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Route 35 Bridge to South Carolina Route 34 on Broad stretch is the only one. The nearby hotels are a bit away
from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There's camping available near Tyger River. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are not so many other good rivers for that around here. The scenic
beauty of Spartanburg/ Union County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. This stretch of Tyger River in South Carolina is 11.6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people.
Briefly about the general area: Lots of rain falls at Tyger River; during the month of March you get the most rain around here while April is usually the driest month. During the long summer days, highs ordinarily are
in the 90's at Tyger River. When the night sets in temperatures plunge down into the 60's. High temperatures through the wintertime are normally in the 50's, and after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Tyger River dip into the 20's.
