This section of Tyger River in Spartanburg/ Union County is 11.6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. The scenic beauty of Spartanburg/ Union County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. The average South Carolina whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make
it an overnighter, so pack your camp stove. There are no other sections to paddle along Tyger River than the Route 35 Bridge to South Carolina Route 34 on Broad section. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. The put-in
is not too far from Newberry, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The campgrounds here at Tyger River are pretty good. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other rivers for that.
