South Carolina whitewater - North Tyger River, Spartanburg County
Spartanburg
county,
Route 231 to South Tyger River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 3 miles
Fun paddle if the water is good. Put in under the bridge on Morris Bridge Road,(gauge is here). I usually take out river left under bridge right after Nesbitt Shoals, just after confluence of North and South Tyger (you know it's close after a large S-turn in the river) Take out either river left, or right AFTER the bridge-lots of 'No Trespassing' signs before the bridge. Shuttle is about 6 hilly miles. Mostly quiet, with some scrapes below 1' on gauge. There are some fun little rapids: First one take dead center. Third one with a nice slot river-left
of center rock formation but you need some water. You can also go river right with a hard slide/small hydraulic back towards the center-then drag back up and run it again. There is a nice tiny play spot river-left about 2/3 into the run. My favorite is a series of small drops about
3/4 into the trip: fun run of about 50 yds-at low water, need to make some turns, watch your angles-small island bisects river-take just left-of-center line and pick your way down on the left. Sneaky little rapid river-left just before bridge can catch you if you are not watching-pick your way river-left after most of Nesbitt Shoals are completed and take the rapid to the right, boat angled right to get pushed to the left and ride the little wave train to the bridge. There are some nice beaches, rocks on which to chill/eat. Lots of wildlife to see (turtles,
snakes, ducks, herons, beaver, hawks...) Last run (4/30/07) I removed some trunks limbs from center lines. Says Hank S.
If you're coming from Spartanburg it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful South
Carolina scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one,
but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch is short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time
in nature will have you coming back for more. This stretch of North Tyger River is 3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. If you've been out of state whitewater
rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so better not forget that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy.
Briefly about the general area: Harrison Shoals is a brilliant local attraction; Nancy Thomas Shoals is a picturesque site
to explore while you're at North Tyger River. North Tyger River is a wet location that gets a great deal of rain; March is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month is November. For the period of the warm days of summer, highs ordinarily are in the 80's at North
Tyger River, and the night is a little colder of course, generally in the 60's. Daytime highs during the winter are in the 50's; nighttime lows in the 20's for North Tyger River.
