The scenic beauty of South Dakota and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The City Park to Evans Park section of Spearfish Creek is 1.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section. The City Park
to Evans Park stretch is the only paddling stretch along Spearfish Creek. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. A good workout
and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There are some good hotels near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The beauty of the Black Hills is a great plus for this river. This is a short paddling stretch so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over.
Briefly about the general area: If you're here, you might as well pop by Hungry Hollow Gulch; on a magnificent day you can take a hike along the Big Hill Ski Trail. At Spearfish Creek
through the summertime highs are in the 80's while overnight lows are generally in the 50's. All through the winter highs are typically in the 30's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Spearfish Creek. Spearfish Creek gets very little rainfall; June is the wettest month
with most rain, and January is the month with the least moisture. That right there is a load of amusing things already but it goes on, the Black Hills has it all.
