South Dakota whitewater - Spearfish Creek, Black Hills, Lawernce County Lawernce county, City Park to Evans Park section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II     1.5 miles   The put-in is not too far from Spearfish, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The scenic beauty of Lawernce County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This section of Spearfish Creek in South Dakota is 1.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II section. Spearfish Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the City Park to Evans Park section is the only one. There are many good hotels to choose from,     and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is a somewhat short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so better not forget that rivers here are less demanding. The Black Hills scenery is wonderful. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. Briefly about the general area: Summer at Spearfish Creek comes with high temperatures in the 80's, and the overnight is slightly cooler of course, typically in the 50's. During the winter highs are in the 30's, and night lows in the 10's for Spearfish Creek. Spearfish Creek is near Hungry Hollow Gulch which is absolutely worth checking out; on a great day you can take   a hike along the Big Hill Ski Trail. Not much rainfall falls here at Spearfish Creek; most of the rain falls all through June while January is usually the driest month. But wait, there's more enjoyable stuff to do in the Black Hills.
