If you're coming from Spearfish it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in South Dakota is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The City Park to Evans Park section of Spearfish Creek is 1.5 miles
long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II section. The scenic beauty of South Dakota and the cool fresh water beats anything. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. The City Park
to Evans Park section is the only paddling section along Spearfish Creek. The river winds through the Black Hills and you get great scenery. This is a short paddling stretch so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. There are some good hotels near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
Briefly about the general area: Near Spearfish Creek you come across Hungry Hollow Gulch which is a good spot to pop by; on a delightful
day you can take a hike along the Big Hill Ski Trail. Through the summer at Spearfish Creek temperatures are commonly in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures fall down into the 50's. For the period of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 30's with winter lows in
the 10's overnight here at Spearfish Creek. All the outdoors amusing stuff in the Black Hills will keep you coming back time and again. Spearfish Creek gets very little rain; June is the wettest month with most rain; the driest of the months is January.
