The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Tennessee are often more challenging than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The beautiful scenery of Polk County and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. This section of Big Creek is 5.9 miles long and is a class III-IV+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. This is a pretty decent
length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came.
You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The FR221/Peavine Road to US64 section is the only paddling section along Big Creek. The put-in location is a short drive from Cleveland, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The wild scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains is great.
Briefly about the general area: Be careful coming to the Great Smoky Mountains, you might not ever wanna return back home again. Take a hike on the Indian Flat Trail, and hiking along the Caney Creek Trail is tremendous
fun. During the warm days of summer, highs commonly are in the 80's at Big Creek. For the duration of the moonlight hours it's ordinarily in the 60's. Throughout the winter highs are in the 40's with temperatures at Big Creek dipping down into the 20's during winter nights.
The high level of precipitation makes Big Creek a reasonably wet site; during March this area sees the most rain, and the driest of the months is October.
