If you're coming from Athens it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Tennessee are harder than the national norm, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. This stretch of Coker Creek in Tennessee is 6 miles long and has been rated as a class III-IV(V) section by American Whitewater. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at
a nearby campground. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The Highway 68 to Hiwassee River stretch is the only paddling stretch along Coker Creek.
Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. The beautiful scenery of Polk County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. The Great Smoky Mountains scenery is wonderful.
Briefly about the general area: There is a wonderful hiking trail in the vicinity of Coker Creek called the Unicoi Mountain Trail; nearby you discover the Smith Mountain
Trail which is a splendid hiking trail. At Coker Creek throughout the months of summer highs are in the 80's, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's while the cold winter nights at Coker Creek are in the 20's. You clearly
have to have a thing about the Great Smoky Mountains. The high level of rainfall makes Coker Creek a reasonably wet location; most of the rain falls all through March, and the driest month of the year is October.
