The starting point is not too far from Athens, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of Tennessee and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains is a great plus for this river. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. This is a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip. Whitewater
rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do
book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This section of Coker Creek in Tennessee is 6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV(V) section of whitewater. The Highway 68 to Hiwassee River section is the only paddling section along Coker Creek. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more.
Briefly about the general area: So many exciting things in the Great Smoky Mountains, just incredible. The high level of rain makes Coker Creek a rather wet
site; through March this area sees the most rain, and the driest month of the year is October. Coker Creek is right by the Unicoi Mountain Trail, and hiking along the Smith Mountain Trail is pleasant fun. All through the days of summer highs here at Coker Creek reach the 80's.
When the night sets in temperatures fall down into the 60's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's, and after the sun is down throughout the winter temperatures at Coker Creek plunge into the 20's.
