The scenic beauty of Tennessee and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in location is a short drive from Chattanooga, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The Barker Camp Road to Bowater Parking Lot section of Cooper Creek is 5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V+ section. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. Whitewater rafting and kayaking
in Tennessee is often tougher than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. This is the only paddling section along Cooper Creek. The beauty of the Cumberland Plateau Mountains is a great plus for this river. Getting some good exercise and a
chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's perfect for a one day trip. The campgrounds here at Cooper Creek are pretty good.
Briefly about the general area: All through the months of summer highs here at Cooper Creek get into the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures fall down into the 60's.
High temperatures through the wintertime are normally in the 40's; after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Cooper Creek plunge into the 20's. A good deal of rain falls at Cooper Creek; the month of March is the wettest with most of the rain while October is
commonly the driest month. While you're here at Cooper Creek you must explore Redbird Point, and what would a location like Cooper Creek be without interesting nearby traits like Little Bend. So much enjoyable stuff to do in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains, not sufficient time. Don't leave Cooper Creek without first checking out Big Bend.
