The starting location is a reasonable drive from Boone, as you can see on the road map further down. The Big Falls to Poga Rd section of Elk River is 5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV-V section of whitewater. This stretch has has enough mileage, you can easily run it on an afternoon. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. There are many good hotels to choose from, but you'd better reserve in advance because     these hotels fill up quick. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. Briefly about the general area: Elk River gets a normal amount of rainfall; through the month of July you get the most rain around here, and October on the other hand is the driest. A great place to go to near Elk River is Cannon Gap; the skiing at Ski Beech is pleasant. Throughout the summer, highs frequently are in the 80's at Elk River, and throughout the night it cools down to the 60's.
