Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Tennessee is often more difficult than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The Big Falls to Poga Rd section of Elk River is 5 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Boone, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The campgrounds
here at Elk River are pretty good. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Big Falls to Poga Rd stretch is just one of them. This is a pretty decent length section,
it's good length for a morning trip. The scenic beauty of Carter and Avery County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come.
Briefly about the general area: Elk River is a good location of common rainfall; July is when you get the most rain here, and October is when it's the driest. Cannon Gap is a pleasant location to take a look at near Elk River, and Ski Beech has good slopes and a friendly staff.
At Elk River through the long summer days highs are in the 80's while nighttime lows are ordinarily in the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's; night lows at Elk River throughout the winter mostly dip into the 20's.
