Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Tennessee tend to be more challenging than the national average, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The beautiful scenery of Tennessee and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. If you're coming from Boone it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Big Falls to Poga Rd section is just one of many. Some people
prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places for that. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
This section of Elk River in Tennessee is 5 miles long and is a class IV-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
Briefly about the general area: Elk River gets a typical amount of annual precipitation; July is the month that gets the most rain; the driest month of the year is October. For the period of the summer months at Elk River temperatures are regularly in the 80's,
and during the night it cools down to the 60's. For the period of the wintertime highs are mostly in the 40's while Elk River night low temperatures through the winter are in the 20's. Near Elk River you find pleasant places like Cannon Gap, and you can never get enough of the good skiing at Ski Beech.
