The starting location is a reasonable drive from Athens, as you can see on the road map further down. The scenic beauty of Tennessee and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Tennessee are harder than the national norm, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The campgrounds here at Laurel Creek are pretty good. Whitewater paddling here in the Great Smoky Mountains is a great experience. Since you're on this site you are probably into
whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. This section is very short so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. The to Tellico right below Turkey Creek Confluence section of Laurel Creek in Monroe
County is 0.2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V section. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Laurel Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the to Tellico right below Turkey Creek Confluence stretch is the only one. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come.
