Tennessee whitewater - Moccasin Creek, Cumberland Plateau Mountains, Rhea County
Rhea
county,
Shut-In Gap Road to Piney River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-II 1 miles
The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The Shut-In Gap Road to Piney River stretch of Moccasin Creek in Rhea County is 1 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-II section of whitewater. The wonderful Tennessee scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Moccasin Creek make the trip here worthwhile. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river,
but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This is a very short stretch so better bring some good walking shoes. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that. The put-in location is a reasonable drive
from Crossville, as you can see on the road map further down. Moccasin Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Shut-In Gap Road to Piney River section is the only one. When you're paddling down a Cumberland Plateau Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come.
Briefly about the general area: All through the days of summer highs here at Moccasin Creek reach the 80's, and all through the night it cools down to the 60's. Highs
