The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Tennessee are often more challenging than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Harriman, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Scott County scenery and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. On this section you do get some distance, it's perfect for a one day trip. The US 27 Bridge to Clear Fork River section of
New River in Tennessee is 8.9 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. The river winds through the Cumberland Plateau Mountains
and you get great scenery. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. New River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the US 27 Bridge to Clear Fork River stretch is the only one. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
Briefly about the general area: If you're here, you might as well check out
Dark Hollow, and no need to travel far to check out interesting stuff like McCoy Rocks. Summer at New River comes with high temperatures in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures drop down into the 60's. During the winter highs are in the 40's, and night lows in the 20's
for New River. A large amount of rainfall falls at New River; March is the wettest month with most rain while October is frequently the driest month. Just can't get enough of the Cumberland Plateau Mountains. What would a site like New River be without interesting close by traits like Reed Bottom.
