The put-in location is a short drive from Harriman, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Fork River stretch of New River in Scott County is 8.9 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The beauty of the Cumberland Plateau Mountains is a great plus for this river. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places.

neighborhood of New River is McCoy Rocks. Through the long summer days at New River highs are generally in the 80's while nighttime lows are frequently in the 60's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 40's with temperatures at New River dipping down into the
20's through winter nights. If you're here at New River, checking out Reed Bottom is a must, and you could always explore Dark Hollow. The high level of rainfall makes New River a pretty wet place; most of the rain falls during March, and October on the other hand is the driest.
