The Big Rocks section of Nolichucky River in Unicoi/ Washington County is 0 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II+(III) section. The starting point is not too far from Johnson City, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The natural beauty of Unicoi/ Washington County and the water flowing gracefully down Nolichucky River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This is a very short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. The Big Rocks stretch is one of many paddling
stretches in this river system. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Tennessee is often tougher than elsewhere, so if you're
not from around here don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: This river is so wonderful. Interesting geology is available here; Shinbone Rock is near Nolichucky River, and don't leave Nolichucky River without first going for a hike along the Patty
Ridge Trail. If you're here at Nolichucky River, checking out The Horseshoe is a must, and the beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Yates Spring. Go for a hike on the California Trail, and Bayles First Shoals is also a pleasant spot to explore. Nolichucky River gets a
large amount of water; most of the rain falls through July, and the driest month of the year is October. Throughout the days of summer at Nolichucky River highs are ordinarily in the 80's. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 60's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's, and overnight lows at Nolichucky River through the winter frequently sink into the 20's.
