Tennessee whitewater - Nolichucky River, Great Smoky Mountains, Unicoi County Unicoi county, Poplar North to Nolichucky Gorge Campground section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS III-IV     8 miles   The scenic beauty of Unicoi County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. The put-in location is a short drive from Johnson City, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch has has enough mileage, good for a one day paddling trip. There are some good hotels near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The campgrounds here at Nolichucky River are pretty good. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so don't     forget that rivers here are less forgiving. This section of Nolichucky River is 8 miles long and is a class III-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Whitewater paddling here in the Great Smoky Mountains is a great experience. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. Briefly about the general area: This river has it all. The high level of rainfall makes Nolichucky River a rather wet site; during the month of July you get the most rain around here, and October on the other hand is the driest. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Nolichucky   River Trail, and since you're here why not pop by Curley Maple Gap. Now, you may assume that's a heap but there's even more fun things to do here in the Great Smoky Mountains. Take a hike on the No Business Trail, and if you want to go to some out of the ordinary stuff, go to Cane Bottom. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Nolichucky River. All through the moonlight hours it's generally in the 60's. High temperatures during the wintertime are normally in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Nolichucky River are in the 20's.
