The starting location is a reasonable drive from Newport, as you can see on the road map further down. The natural beauty of Tennessee and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so don't forget that many runs in this state are not easy. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. The river winds through the
Great Smoky Mountains and you get great scenery. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. This stretch is mid length, it's perfect for a one day trip. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if
you make reservations in advance you're all set. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling spots. This stretch of Pigeon River is 4.2 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater.
Briefly about the general area: A delightful place next to Pigeon River is Moore Hollow, and hiking is a popular thing to do around Pigeon River; Stone Mountain Trail is a good local trail. This spot, the Great
Smoky Mountains, has so much outdoors cool stuff. The Baxter Creek Trail offers hiking at its best. Pigeon River gets lots of water; May is the month that gets the most rain, and October is the month with the least moisture. For the duration of the warm months at Pigeon River
highs are mostly in the 80's. Summer night lows fall down to the 60's. Highs through the winter are generally in the 40's while Pigeon River nighttime low temperatures during the winter are in the 20's.
