If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The Walter's Power Plant at Waterville to Bridge at Hartford stretch of Pigeon River in Cocke County is 4.2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. The wonderful Tennessee scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Pigeon River are reasons enough
to come here and paddle. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. This stretch is mid length, it's good length for a morning trip. The starting location is a
short drive from Newport, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Walter's Power Plant at Waterville to Bridge at Hartford section is just one of them. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good rivers for that around here. The beautiful Great Smoky Mountains scenery is an added bonus.

Hollow is a splendid place to have a look at near Pigeon River, and the Baxter Creek Trail is a tremendous hiking trail close by. Summer brings highs in the 80's to Pigeon River, and through the night it cools down to the 60's. Highs through the winter are generally in the 40's,
and overnight lows throughout the winter for Pigeon River tend to be in the 20's. You absolutely should have a thing about the Great Smoky Mountains. On a tremendous day at Pigeon River you can take a hike along the Stone Mountain Trail. Pigeon River gets lots of water; May is when you get the most rain here while October is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
