If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Tennessee you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Newport, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Whitewater paddling here
in the Great Smoky Mountains is a great experience. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Walter's Power Plant at Waterville to Bridge at Hartford stretch is just one of them. The beautiful scenery of Cocke County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough
to come here and paddle. The Walter's Power Plant at Waterville to Bridge at Hartford section of Pigeon River is 4.2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.

River is close to Moore Hollow which is positively worth stopping at; there are great places to look at along the Stone Mountain Trail. The high level of precipitation makes Pigeon River a pretty wet place; May is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month is October.
