Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The beautiful scenery of Bledsoe County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Cumberland Plateau Mountains scenery is wonderful. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The put-in location is a short drive from Chattanooga, if you're not familiar
with the area there's a road map further down the page. There are no other stretches to paddle along Big Possum Creek than the Waldens Ridge to Bakewell stretch. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these
hotels fill up quick. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. The Waldens Ridge to Bakewell section of Big Possum Creek is 8.5 miles long and has been rated as a class III+(IV) section by American Whitewater. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Do schedule some time to check out Bare Point near Big Possum Creek if you have a
chance; Board Camp Gulf is in the neighborhood, and is a perfect spot. So many amusing things to do here in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains, too perfect to be true. The warmest time of the year at Big Possum Creek comes with high temperatures in the 80's. For the duration
of the moonlight hours it's mostly in the 60's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Big Possum Creek. A good deal of precipitation falls at Big Possum Creek; the month of March is the wettest with most of the rain, and October is the month with the least moisture.
