Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The put-in location is a short drive from Johnson City, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beautiful scenery of Tennessee and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the
river for a while have people coming from far and near. The wild scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains is great. The Little Bald Creek to Tumbling Rich Gap Brook section of Spivey Creek is 1.8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V+ section. This is a pretty
short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. There are no other sections to paddle along Spivey Creek than the Little Bald Creek to Tumbling Rich Gap Brook section. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: The surroundings of this river have so much to offer. If
you're here, you might as well go to Big Cove; a short spree to Spivey Falls is always worthwhile. Spivey Creek generally gets a great deal of rainfall; the month with most of the rain is July, and the driest of the months is October. High temperatures at Spivey Creek through
the summertime are in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures descend down into the 60's. Highs all through the wintertime are ordinarily in the 40's, and nighttime lows in the 20's for Spivey Creek. Now, you may assume that's a heap but there's even more enjoyable things
to do here in the Great Smoky Mountains. Go for a hike on the Bald Mountain Trail; great hiking is available along the Granny Lewis Trail.
