Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Tennessee tend to be more challenging than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Athens, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or     both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good rivers for that around here. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Bridge below Jared's Knee to Ranger Station stretch is just one of many. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This stretch of Tellico River is 5.4 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. The river winds through the Great Smoky Mountains and you get great scenery. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Briefly about the general area: At Tellico River all through the months of summer highs are in the 80's. When the night   sets in temperatures descend down into the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's; night lows at Tellico River throughout the winter usually descend into the 20's. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Great Smoky Mountains. Hiking along the Basin Gap Trail is tremendous fun, and you can have a splendid hiking adventure along the Basin Lead Trail. The high level of rain makes Tellico River a reasonably wet spot; March is the month that gets the most rain while October is regularly the driest month.
