This stretch of Tellico River in Monroe County is 4.2 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. The nature scenery of Monroe County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. The Ranger Station to Tellico Plains stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. When you're paddling down a Great Smoky Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery
along the way too. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Tennessee are harder than the national norm, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. This stretch is mid length, it's good length for a morning trip. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great
campgrounds nearby. The starting location is a short drive from Athens, as you can see on the road map further down. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots.
Briefly about the general area: Through the summertime here at Tellico River, high temperatures mostly reach the 80's while night lows
are regularly in the 60's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 40's while Tellico River overnight low temperatures during the wintertime are in the 20's. The Basin Gap Trail is a fine hiking trail close to Tellico River, and if you fancy a little side visit,
try Aiken Hollow. Whohoo, so many enjoyable things in one place! The Great Smoky Mountains is unbeatable! On a good day at Tellico River you can take a hike along the Warriors Passage Trail. The high level of precipitation makes Tellico River a quite wet place; most of the rain falls throughout March while October is usually the driest month.
