The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The wonderful Tennessee scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. This stretch of Thunderhead Prong is 1.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV section. If you're coming from Sevierville it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map
further down the page with more info on that. There's camping available near Thunderhead Prong. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good rivers for that around here. The river winds through the Great Smoky Mountains and you get great scenery. You
might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. This is a short paddling stretch so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Thunderhead Prong doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the to confluence with Lynn Camp Prong stretch is the only one.
Briefly about the general area: If you want to pop by some out of the
ordinary stuff, pop by Devils Bench; there is a great hiking trail nearby called the Meigs Mountain Trail. Summertime highs at Thunderhead Prong mostly tend to be in the 80's. Summer nighttime lows sink down to the 60's. For the period of the wintertime the highs are regularly
in the 40's, and night lows in the 20's for Thunderhead Prong. So many amusing things in the Great Smoky Mountains, just fantastic. A glorious spot to go to near Thunderhead Prong is Green Camp Gap. Thunderhead Prong is a wet spot that gets lots of rainfall; the wettest month of the year is mostly March, that's the one that rains the most; October on the other hand is the driest.
